The objective of this Seminar on Cassava Value Chain Development is to share developing countries’ experience and good practices on cassava value chain development, provide exchange opportunity for more specific demand-supply programming, and build the platform to strengthen cooperation in future. More specifically, this Seminar aims to: Support developing countries to share technology and practice on cassava value chain including post-harvest loss reduction, processing and nutrition; Provide an opportunity for concerned partners to exchange insights and visions on solutions and pathways to support cassava value chain development in different areas; Build a thematic platform to facilitate international cooperation on cassava value chain.

The Seminar aims to provide insightful discussions on national grain reserves system and digitalized technologies for food systems transformation. Through South-South Cooperation policy dialogue, this seminar is expected to exchange knowledge and experience on grain reserves management system to address current challenges and advance country-led progress towards effective grain reserves system and food security.

WFP China COE and AliResearch decided to co-organize a South-South Cooperation Dialogue on Rural Youth Development Invigorated by E-commerce on 15-16 December 2022 to promote peer-to-peer learning on e-commerce, exchange thematic knowledge and experience from different developing countries, and provide the platform for youth entrepreneurs to exchange, discuss and explore this important topic further. Specifically, this dialogue aims to launch the report E-commerce Promotes Rural Vitalization in West China; exchange thematic knowledge and experience about rural e-commerce development; provide the exchange platform for youth entrepreneurs to exchange experience and views.

China has made remarkable progress in its rice sector, as its per capita grain possession exceeds 474.4 kg. Post-harvest loss management, such as promoting advanced and practical green grain storage technology and information technology has played a significant role in contributing China’s achievement. Through South-South Cooperation, the experience and lessons learned at the technical and policy level from China could assist the African rice stakeholders in addressing some of the challenges encountered in the past few decades. WFP China COE, in collaboration with CERFAM, has already placed the rice value chain with high importance and is dedicated to enhancing China-Africa cooperation on the rice value chain. BILL&MELINDA Gates Foundation in China has been engaged with Chinese academic partners aiming to support Africa’s agricultural extension system for local capacity development in some Africa countries and has supported this project financially as well. It is the common vision that rice value chain enhancement would be a prime entry point for WFP and BILL&MELINDA Gates Foundation in China to jointly make their due contributions to support and help African nation’s capacity for food security.

This seminar demonstrate how different actors ( international organization, government, broadcast and TV, private sector, academic instituion) could do to support digitalised South-South Cooperation and facilitate digital-driven rural transformation.

In China, innovative and digitalized models, such as grain bank and e-trading platform, have been adopted to support the smallholder market access and better post-harvest management. The grain bank supports smallholders from grain storage, processing to financial service and many other activities. There are some large grain banks in Shandong, Henan, Heilongjiang, and other major grain-producing areas in China. E-trading platform is another model showcasing the informatized and digitalized grain storage to support smallholder market access. China has gained experience from the past decades in the above-mentioned models, which can be shared and exchanged with other developing countries. In responding to the local needs from government and stakeholders in Ghana, WFP China COE in collaboration with Ghana Country Office will organize a Series of Workshops on Innovative and Digitalized Smallholder Market Access to improve the smallholder market access. Meanwhile, such exchanges will promote the technical exchange between China and Ghana under South-South Cooperation and thus will facilitate further collaboration between two countries.

The content of the presentations demonstrated the important role of relevant technologies and appropriate methods in cassava and banana production, processing and storage.

WFP’s policy on disaster risk reduction and management focuses on building resilience and capacity among the most vulnerable people, communities and countries to ensure food and nutrition security while reducing the risk of disaster and protecting and enhancing lives and livelihoods. The policy emphasizes that disaster risk reduction bridges emergency response, recovery and development with targeted prevention, mitigation and preparedness activities. Gender considerations are crucial in addressing disaster risks because men and women are affected differently by disasters. Leveraging China’s knowledge and experience in aspect of disaster risk reduction through South-South Cooperation for other developing countries’ capacity strengthening, based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China and WFP in 2019, is one of four prioritized areas of WFP China Office served as the WFP Centre of Excellence for Rural Transformation (WFP China COE) and could contribute to developing countries’ resilience to disasters.
