The WFP Centre of Excellence for Rural Transformation (WFP China COE) organizes a comprehensive webinar series on Agricultural Disaster Management from June 25 to July 16, 2026. The webinar consists of four sessions in total, providing a collaborative platform for knowledge exchange among developing countries to explore practical tools, operational models, and proven technologies for effective agricultural disaster management and safeguarding food security. The four sessions are as follows:

 

Session I: Multi-stakeholder Coordination to Protect Agricultural Livelihoods

Session II: Early Warning and Impact-Based Forecasting for Disaster-Ready Agriculture

Session III: Farmer‑Centric Innovations for Agricultural Disaster Risk Reduction

Session IV: Technological Solutions for Addressing Waterlogging and Safeguarding Water Access

 

This course is part of Session III: Farmer-Centric Innovations for Agricultural Disaster Risk Reduction. The session aims to enhance agricultural resilience and empower grassroots producers by sharing China's successful strategies in agricultural insurance market-building and the deployment of targeted, digital disaster warning tools. It is structured around two main parts: Building an Agricultural Insurance System: China's Experience and Improving Last Mile Disaster Preparedness through Agricultural Disaster Warning Apps. The first part highlights the global challenge of rising agricultural losses driven by climate extremes and introduces China's evolution toward a highly subsidized public-private partnership model, emphasizing the crucial role of government financial and institutional support in building the world's largest agricultural insurance market. The second part reviews the dissemination of specialized meteorological warnings to frontline producers, detailing the core functions of the "Nongzaijing" WeChat mini program, which addresses the last-mile gap by delivering localized disaster monitoring, risk forecasting, and actionable agricultural guidance directly to farmers.

YI Fujin

Professor

Prof. Yi is a Professor at Zhejiang University. His research focuses on agricultural risk management and rural development. He has served as President of the China Section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (2021–2023), Vice Chair of the Youth Committee of the China Agricultural Risk Management Research Association, Associate Editor of Climatic Change, and Editorial Board Member of Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy.

ZHANG Yi

Research Professor

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on agrometeorological disaster risk assessment, climate change impacts and relevant uncertainty analysis, crop model optimization and application, as well as weather index insurance design. She has led two projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including the Youth Program on quantifying uncertainty of climate change impacts on crop yields and the General Program exploring combined heat and drought effects on maize yields across China. She also serves as a key participant in a national key R&D program for crop disaster early warning and mitigation technologies.
