This course is the third session of the Webinar Series on Grain Post-Harvest Handling for Smallholders, co-organized by WFP PPGR and WFP China COE and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.

This session, Unlocking Grain Market Access for Smallholders, introduces how integrated processing systems, supportive policies, and collaborative business models can empower smallholder farmers to overcome market barriers, increase value addition, and enhance their participation in competitive agricultural value chains. Part I examines the technical, value chain, and policy limitations in market access faced by smallholder farmers in Africa and presents solutions to enhance farmers’ ability to reduce post-harvest losses and participate more effectively in markets. Part II presents the Maruo Farms case study in  Gambia, highlighting business efforts to strengthen local rice value chains. Key challenges such as low domestic production and high dependency on imports are addressed by partnering with smallholders to create direct market linkages and through collaboration with WFP’s school feeding programme. Part III explores China’s on-farm primary grain processing system, focusing on rice and maize processing case studies to illustrate practical operations and scalability, addressing policy support for loss reduction and promoting models to improve market access for smallholders in China.
