This course is the second session of the Webinar Series on Grain Post-Harvest Handling for Smallholders, co-organized by WFP PPGR and WFP China COE and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.

 

This session, Smallholder Grain Storage – From China to Africa, demonstrates practical innovations for enhancing smallholder grain storage, showcasing China’s experience in storage systems development and its adaptation in African contexts like Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea through South-South cooperation. Part I introduces grain storage practices for smallholders in China, highlighting the characteristics and storage requirements of rice, wheat, and maize, along with practical equipment types, safety measures, and rural service models for reducing post-harvest losses. Part II focuses on the Rice Value Chain (RVC) project in Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea, with details of the background and challenges of the rice sector, project interventions supported by WFP and China, and key outcomes in post-harvest management, local processing, storage, and China-Africa cooperation. Part III centres on the experience of implementing small steel silos in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to reduce post-harvest losses, improve food security, and strengthen smallholder farmers’ storage capacity through South-South cooperation and integrated local engagement.

Lecturer

Yan Xiaoping

Researcher, Chief Technical Officer

Mr. Yan Xiaoping is a Researcher and a Chief Technical Officer of China grain reserves group. He is the member of the evaluation committee of the senior professional title of the natural science research series of the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration. He is the member of a council of Grain Storage Branch of China Cereals and Oil Association (CCOA). He has been long-term engaged in the research on the prevention and control technology of storage pests & microbe and technology of grain storage.

Mr. Yan has presided 9 national and industry standards, participated in more than 10 national projects, published more than 70 papers, and won three times science & technology awards of CCOA.

Feng Yan

Programme Policy Officer

Ms. Feng Yan has been managing the West Africa Rice Value Chain Project and worked for a several South-South and trilateral cooperation pilot projects at the WFP China Office over the past two and half years. Prior to joining the WFP China Office, she worked in the different institutions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China for over 30 years, where she was involved in managing agricultural development projects financed by international financial institutions, implementing agricultural trade promotion activities, and serving at the Chinese Embassy in India.

 

Pierre Tahe

Programme Policy Officer

Pierre TAHE is an expert with over 20 years of experience in food security, climate resilience, rural development, and agricultural value chains across Africa. Since 2019, he has been serving as Programme Policy Officer at CERFAM, where he supports African countries through technical assistance, South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC), and the promotion of good practices. He has held key programmatic positions with the World Food Programme in Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is recognized for his strategic leadership and ability to manage complex development programmes, emergency operations, and community-based initiatives.
