Overview of Rice Value Chain Development in Africa

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the key developments and significant challenges in Africa's rice sector, emphasizing the centrality of rice as a staple food for millions. It highlights issues pertaining to agronomic practices and post-harvest operations, while detailing the concerted efforts being made to address these challenges through innovative approaches, technology adoption, and strategic partnerships, all geared towards achieving rice self-sufficiency and ultimately improving the livelihoods of millions of people across Africa.

 

The course comes from 2024 Seminar titled “From Paddy to Prosperity: Inclusive Partnerships and Innovative Financing for China-Africa Rice Value Chain Cooperation,” which was held in 17-19 July 2024 in Chengdu, China. This policy dialogue was co-organised by WFP China COE, United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration (NAFRA). Its objective is to facilitate discussions and exchange insights on China-Africa rice value chain development with a focus on fostering inclusive partnership and promoting innovative financing and investment opportunities.

Sali A, NDINDENG, B.Sc., M.Sc., PhD in Agriculture (Biosystem Sustainability) from Hokkaido University – Japan is Principal Scientist and Program Leader of the Rice Sector Development Program working at Africa Rice Canter (AfricaRice). He is the lead scientist in the development/adaptation of several innovations such as – (i) methods of rice postharvest losses valuation in Africa, (ii) an improved artisanal parboiling technology codenamed GEM, (iii) nutritious rice, low glycemic products for both adults and infants and (iv) rice husk stoves for household and cottage industry cooking processes. Dr Ndindeng is the principal and Co-Principal investigator for several research grants funded by different organization such as BMZ-GIZ funded CORIS, The European Union funded HealthyDiet4Africa, the Islamic Development Bank funded Mini-GEM parboiler, CGIAR Systems organization program and the African Development Bank funded TAAT-1,  2 and REWARD project, etc. He has 34 Scientific Citation Index papers listed in Scopus to his credit and a total 71 publications listed on Researchgate.
