This course is jointly developed by the Tropical Crops Genetic Resources Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) and the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It aims to equip farmers with the key techniques for harvesting and storing cassava stems, effectively reduce losses during these processes, and ensure a reliable supply of planting materials for the next growing season. The course provides a systematic overview of the entire process –from stem selection and field harvesting to storage management. Topics include types of cassava stems, key points for field rouging, scientific criteria for identifying mature and healthy stem stems, technical specifications for cutting and preventing breakage, site selection and construction of storage pits, and management practices during the storage period. The core technical essentials can be summarized as: Conduct intensive selection in the field and remove inferior plants, prioritizing mature and healthy stems; cut swiftly with a sharp knife to avoid breakage and bundle stems properly for easy transport; dig storage pits on elevated, well-drained sites with ventilation holes, and cover with soil to maintain moisture and prevent cold damage. Through these standardized and actionable guidelines, the course aims to help farmers improve the preservation quality of cassava stems, thereby laying a solid foundation for high yields in the coming season.
