This course is part of the Webinar on Digitalized Smallholder Market Access held on the May 5, 2023. It examines the opportunities and challenges associated with Ghana’s grain e-trading landscape. The course highlights key market constraints faced by smallholder farmers-including limited access, high transportation costs, restricted credit availability, and the scarcity of nearby warehouses. It also reviewed status of the Ghana Commodity Exchange and outlines CTED’s interventions, such as nano-commodity exchanges, credit initiatives, and warehouse development. In addition, it explores emerging potentials for digital trade, including blockchain applications, the e-Cedi, and the AfCFTA’s digital trade framework. Overall, the course provides practical insights for improving the inclusivity and efficiency of Ghana’s agricultural e-trade systems.

Professor

Yaw Nyarko is the Professor of Economics at New York University (NYU) and the Director of NYU Africa House. His research interests focus on the areas of economic development, theoretical economics, models of human capital as engines of economic growth, brain drain and skills acquisition, labor economics, and migration. His current research focuses on technology and economic development, commodities exchanges and markets in Africa, and determinants and returns of labor migration from South Asia in the UAE, as well as the impacts of various policy measures on the mobility of labor within the UAE.
