In this class, we will discuss the development of early warning practices, challenges, and ways forward in creating a multi-hazard early warning system. Our focus will be on the support provided by the Department of Disaster Risk Reduction, Ministry of Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China. During this session, we will explore how the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China has created a comprehensive early warning system that includes pre-deployment of response units, mass evacuation of residents, supply preparation and allocation, and post-disaster emergency rescue and relief. We will also discuss the multiple major hazards and different types of hazards that can occur at different times, leading to several secondary disasters and potential interrelated effects. We will highlight the importance of having a multi-hazard early warning system that can effectively alert people to the potential risks and hazards in their area, allowing them to take necessary precautions and be better prepared for emergencies.
